Cosmetic Dentistry has certainly become more popular, but if you haven’t been keeping up with Preventive Dentistry, you just may not be a candidate when it comes to Dental Veneers, Dental Bonding, or Dental Implants. In fact, most restorative dental procedures cannot be carried out until you have healthy teeth and gums.
Preventive Dentistry is the first step towards a healthy mouth. Your dentist recommends that you brush twice a day and use your floss once within a 24 hour period. Over flossing could damage your gums. Make sure that you change your soft bristled toothbrush at least four times a year and keep an eye on the bristles. You want to make sure that nothing has frayed and that the toothbrush is in good shape. Never use a hard bristled brush as brushing too hard with a hard toothbrush can damage your gums. Your dentist also wants you to use fluoride toothpaste. If you are unsure what brands contain fluoride, you can find a list of ADA recommended tooth products on the American Dental Association website.
Although brushing and flossing needs to be added to Preventive Dentistry care, so do regular checkups with your dentist. Those Porcelain Veneers could be a couple of appointments away if you haven’t seen your dentist in a few months, or years.
When you have your dental checkup, your dentist will make sure that you are free from gum disease and tooth decay. If gingivitis or periodontal disease is detected, your dentist will want to heal your gums before beginning any restorative or cosmetic dental treatments.
Last but not least, your Preventive Dentistry program needs to include a healthy diet. You may visit your dentist twice a year, brush, floss, and rinse, but if you live on sugar and junk food, your teeth and gums will pay the price.
Steer clear of starchy and sticky foods and keep away from the sodas, energy and sports drinks. Try including more fresh vegetables, nuts, cheese in your diet, and always enjoy citrus fruits as part of a larger meal.
